How I Capture Authentic Smiles
If you’ve ever tried to get kids to pose and smile for a photo, you know it can sometimes feel like an impossible task. But as a family photographer specializing in natural, candid moments, I can tell you that forced poses and “say cheese!” moments aren’t the only way to capture beautiful smiles and genuine expressions. In fact, with a few key strategies, outdoor family sessions can become a delightful experience for the whole family—kids included! Here’s how I make kids feel comfortable, capture those authentic smiles, and turn a photo session into a fun family outing.
1. I make the Session Playful
The first step to capturing authentic moments is to make the experience feel more like play than a formal photo session. Kids naturally respond to activities that are engaging and enjoyable, so incorporating play into the shoot helps them relax and be themselves. A few playful activities that I use, are games, competitions and dancing. If the location allows for it, I bring a portable speaker with songs that the kids love. This way they always get in the mood.
2. I give Kids Control
Kids are often thrilled to feel “in charge,” even for a few minutes. Letting them suggest poses, lead their parents to a spot they like, or even take a silly photo can work wonders for their mood and cooperation. I like to let them decide on where we go, or I even let them take a picture with my camera, so they can experience something new.
3. I create Comfort with Conversation
I make it a point to get to know the kids a little before we start taking photos. Building a quick rapport can make a big difference in their comfort level. I ask them about their interests, like a favorite animal or dinosaur. Or I let them do a countdown for the picture of their sibling.
4. I use Movement to Capture Energy
Kids have energy to burn, and movement helps channel that energy in a way that creates dynamic, candid photos. Instead of asking them to sit still, I encourage activities that feel active and allow them to move around. Parents can swing the kids around, we can do twirling, running and dancing, and many other things to get some movement in the photos.
5. I focus on Connection
The magic of family photos lies in the connections between family members. I remind parents that perfect poses aren’t the goal—instead, it’s about capturing the love and bonds that make their family unique. I encourage natural interactions, so I let them sit together and ask the parent to whisper something funny of sweet in the kids’ ear. These little interactions can lead to spontaneous smiles and genuine moments of connection.
